Merdeka*! Let's Squat!

*Merdeka = Free in Indonesian

Well, the last social event that we had was Indonesian night organized by our CEEDer Ferry. He prepared some Indonesian meals which I unfortunately didn't take picture of; he invited everyone to come to the AIESEC house at 6:30pm and voila!, three hours later the food's finally ready.

Why Indonesian night? The 17th of August is the independence day of Indonesia, and apparently we have no less than three Indonesians in town for the summer. Of course the celebration's still going to happen! The original plan (according to him) is for us to play some games that people in Indonesia usually do during independence day after eating some Indonesian food, and then followed by watching Gie, an Indonesian movie about the reformation period in 1966.

Of course given that we only started eating at 9, we had to scratch the movie. The game was still in the agenda though, albeit we only managed to do one type, but it was so much fun! Want proves? We got pictures!

The idea is to hang a pen with string around your hip, and the goal of the game is to insert the pen to an empty bottle right underneath you by squatting and only moving your hip. If everyone start at the same time, whoever insert the pen inside the bottle first wins the game. Confused? If you see the pictures it makes sense:

The night was finally over after some dancing action...

Summer is fun, don't you think? Find more pictures at our Flickr account!

Updates...with pictures!

Whoaaa... it's been way too long since the last time I updated this blog with the stuff we're up to. I'm checking my photos right now and I still got some pictures from end of June! And it's almost the end of August now.. yikes!

So around that time Celso the Brazilian intern was still pretty new to the town (seems like a long time ago). Sang and I took him to The Rooftop for some beers (and of course he preferred a bottle of peach cider).

Sticky Wicket

Next is... CEEDer welcome party! After a series of miscommunication and intense panic attack, Ferry the Indonesian CEEDer arrived at the bus depot downtown. He actually thought Vancouver is only a mile away from Victoria so he decided to just hop there. Fortunately Nancy (UBC!) in Vancouver was unbelievably nice and patient that she decided to wait for THREE hours at the airport (after some hot persuasion from my side.. haha) just to tell him to take the ferry to Victoria.

Thank God for that, or else the party would've been canceled. We greeted him with style, by playing quarters!

Group picture! That's always mandatory and fun.

Exactly the next day was Canada Day. Unlike the previous years, UBC and SFU didn't hop on the ferry to visit their coastal friends due to, well, various reasons. But of course we still decided to have fun regardless! We gave Celso and Ferry a little tour of downtown Victoria in the afternoon, and waited for the fireworks in the evening.

The fireworks sucked. Gotta admit that, but hanging out together with a whole bunch of aiesecers in front of the Empress in the middle of a sea of people is always fun! It's even funnier when we realized there's also another "show" happening during the fireworks show...

Those were fun days, a lot of social activities going on. The day after that we decided to go kayaking at Elk Lake. Luckily we picked the perfect day to do it, warm, sunny, and the view was incredibly gorgeous! And minimelts after, mmmmm....

It was World Cup season, and birthday season as well! July 7th was Celso's birthday, and the next day was Patty's. We went to Sticky Wicket to celebrate Celso's, but for Patty we decided to have something more "special" due to some "mandate" from her beloved mom :D .

The day started with the victory of Germany over Portugal (woot!) and the fall of the birthday girl over a bottle of Colt 45...

Patty's Birthday Party 1

So we thought, "oh shoot, it's not fun! let's blindfold her!", and we did. We thought again, "let's take her to Cafe Mexico, get some more people to come there, order lots of food and get her mom to pay!", and we did. Haha, that was fun.

As planned, Patty was surprised all right, especially after she realized who's behind all those. She was a happy camper when she's about the blow the candles.

I don't really have all the pictures of the things that we've been doing since then. Ultimate frisbee, random drinking, lots of barbecue, all the summer fun stuff.

From the relaxing time at the beach...

all in all the past two months have been superbly great, and as it should be this summer spells F-U-N. Yay for our LC!

Who's been in @ for too long???

@ Ed posted This list on their LC blog and it is scarryyy...I think I personally can relate to 14 out of 17 of the items. Check it out for yourself!

Oh and I thought it was pretty funny that it had the "Quote Wall" reference, since we here in Victoria are completely obsessed with posting up EVERY 'interesting' quote we hear! I didn't realize it was a trend in the other LCs too! haha...

(And Heikel: I know you'll eventually master item #5 heheheheheman!)

I'm sure you all will comment and add more to the list but here's my addition: You know you've been in @ for too long when you procrastinate studying for a HUGE final which is in 2 days by LC blog surfing.

Miss you tons! Cant believe it has been almost 2 years since I arrived in Vic...crazy, eh?

Update from Agata!

So does everyone remember our lovely and talented Agata Lis??! Sure ya do, she joined AIESEC last semester and she came with us to NLDC. Well...in case you're THAT out of the loop, Agata is now working in AIESEC at a more international level as the VP External Relations for the Central and Eastern Europe Growth Network!!! She left in May or June for beautiful Budapest, Hungary (where she works) and she's been having a blast ever since, here's what she has to say about her experience:

~~~~~~~~~~~
Hey @ Vic!
Sorry for being so terrible at keeping in touch with our LC! Settling in, finishing transition, and preparing for IC has kept me more than busy! Still, that's no excuse and I will be better at keeping you guys updated on what is going on.
Work here is absolutely AMAZING. I have learned so much in the past two months - probably more than my four years at UVic! I've learned about a lot of the AIESEC processes, such as building competencies or facilitating a conference -- so it's definitely structured and "institutionalized" all the bits of information I have learned over the past few years.
For the past two months I've been setting up my infrastructure to start selling AIESEC at a regional level. I've had the opportunity to spend one week working with the AI team in Rotterdam. It is absolutely INSANE how organized everything is and how efficient and structured the processes are. I was especially lucky to work with the ER Director and his team. I also found myself at the AI transition party which was a brilliant experience.
In two weeks time, I will be heading over to Warsaw, Poland for IC, where I have a few seminars to facilitate at the pre-meeting. I was put in charge of facilitating "CEE Spirit" at IC, so I better brush up on the AIESEC dances and cheers! Good thing you guys taught me a thing or two!
As for social life - most of it has been AIESEC related, of course! Matt, from our LC came to visit a few weeks ago. My roommate and work colleague, Ines, has quite a background with our LC, since she's worked with three people from it. She's from LC Zagreb and was PD on the Croatian MC. I've also met many trainees in Budapest and have been hanging out with their MC team.
Last week I was on the Croatian coast for a conference there and my two friends were visiting from Victoria. We had a blast. I highly recommend finding ANY excuse to go to Croatia!
This week is the huge annual Sziget Festival in Budapest, where it's major bands on Sziget Island for a whole week. Ines and I have a few friends visiting, and some of the former AI team is in town.
Overall, I'm having such a blast and I'm keeping very busy. Work is challenging, the summer has been great, and it seems like things are going to get even busier and even more fun in the near future.
How are you guys doing? How are the new trainees? Did everyone from my review board end up going on an exchange? Any cool new projects you're working on? Prepping for the new semester? Say hi to everyone and please pass on the update!
Take care! I will contact you guys after IC!
Wow so great to see that you've got the @ lingo down now Agata! What have we been up to over here? A WHOLE bunch of craziness really, we're slowly introducing the Canadian and BC 'culture' to our CEEDer(Ferry) and intern (Celso). We'll have to blog about it soon. In the next few months more interns are coming in from Ecuador, Turkey and Hungary so it'll be exciting!
Keep up the good work and I hope you keep the @ Vic spirit goin over there! Teach the entire CEE the coconut dance!!
